Context
Recently, SRUCSA was asked to help promote a local student group connected to the Aberdeen Universities Officers’ Training Corps (UOTC). This group, and similar ones across the country, run social events and outdoor activities for students that offer leadership and teamwork opportunities through a military framework. Although there’s no obligation for anyone in the UOTC join the Armed Forces, it is ultimately a branch of the military.
Our Thinking
We considered and discussed whether this is something SRUCSA will promote. The Armed Forces exist to engage in warfare, and that sits uncomfortably with the current SRUCSA Co-President team.
We don’t judge individual students’ beliefs, nor wish to stop anyone from taking part. We are aware that many see the Armed Forces as necessary to protect countries and maintain peace. We also understand the value people place on the training, structure, and community that the UOTC provides. Those views are valid and respected.
Our Action
We’ve agreed to be clear on our stance, while remaining mindful that our view is not the only one.
We won’t promote the UOTC or other military-linked groups on SRUCSA platforms. We don’t believe it’s right for us, as a students’ association, to endorse organisations whose purpose involves armed conflict.
At the same time, we won’t prevent others from sharing information or taking part in those opportunities themselves. We hope this creates space for students to make up their own minds and stick to their own principles.
In solidarity,
Mhairi, Alex and Schaun
