Student Voice Action Keep Residents Catering Experience

Students at Barony were recently told their catered meals might be replaced with microwave dinners. That landed badly, and rightly so. Once SRUCSA picked it up, students spoke plainly about what that would mean for their day-to-day life. We took those concerns straight to SRUC, and the decision has now been pushed back for the rest of this academic year. No campus will see changes to residential catering before summer.

After hearing about potential changes of moving the Barony residential students catering options to microwave meals only, we organized the student voice and worked with SRUC to stop any changes within this academic year. The following is a joint statement from SRUC and SRUCSA.

Following the recent SRUCSA Food and Catering Provision Survey, we would like to clarify that there will be no changes to the food provisions for residential students on any campus for this academic year.

The decision to delay changes to residential catering was made following a meeting between SRUCSA and SRUC where SRUCSA made SRUC aware of the impacts of the proposed changes.

What happened was:

  • SRUC decided to stop serviced food provision for residential students
  • SRUCSA became aware of this decision and brought students together to discuss the impacts this would have
  • SRUCSA and SRUC met and SRUC decided to postpone the changes
  • SRUCSA conducted the food survey and presented the findings to SRUC
  • SRUC assured SRUCSA that no changes would be made this academic year and that future changes would be made in partnership with students

We appreciate your engagement with SRUCSA’s survey and the valuable feedback you have provided. Your input helps us better understand your experiences and preferences around food and catering services across our campuses.

We are continuing to gather your thoughts on the food provision at all campuses through our food survey and Speak Week. These will help us inform any future consultation on the way food is provided for students on SRUC campuses.
